Advanced Access Management (AAM) is data access and security feature that restricts user access to specific Animals, Taxonomies, and Enclosures.  AAM is an add-on feature that increases administrative capabilities beyond the basic role control provided with the default version of ZIMS.

 

For example, AAM can provide a member the ability to give keepers in one department (e.g., carnivores) access to all of the animals in that department and restrict access to the animals in all other departments (e.g., birds, reptiles, and primates).

 

AAM does not restrict the global sharing of animal information; it ensures that the animal data can only be shared with authorized users within an individual institution.  AAM enhances an institution’s capacity to facilitate access for direct data entry and use of custom roles without compromising data protection in the process. This supports global best practices in data protection by reducing the potential for unauthorized access and/or changes or distribution of core business information outside appropriate use.

 

 

 

Why is AAM Needed in a Platform Designed to Emphasize Data Sharing?

 

AAM does not restrict the global sharing of animal information; it ensures that the animal data can only be shared with authorized users within an individual institution.  AAM enhances an institution’s capacity to facilitate access for direct data entry and use of custom roles without compromising data protection in the process. This supports global best practices in data protection by reducing the potential for unauthorized access and/or changes or distribution of core business information outside appropriate use.

 

AAM facilitates multiple roles doing direct entry into ZIMS.  It provides extensive support for keepers doing direct entry of husbandry information while the registrar retains primary oversight for system administration, related training, collection activity reports and data quality control.

 

AAM is a tool that provides security and data protection for the institution, while at the same time empowering keepers with complete access to enter and view information on the animals they care for on a daily basis. This in turn facilitates building a positive, productive team-oriented relationship between the registrar and animal keepers and should be supported by a robust training and compliance program.

 

AAM applies to key components of ZIMS for Husbandry where data security is needed the most.  It does not apply to ZIMS for Medical or ZIMS for Studbooks. 

 

External Data Sharing can be used in the AAM platform.  Like AAM, it is an institutional preference to use or not use the External Data Sharing feature in ZIMS.
