RECORDING PARENTS FOR ASEXUAL/PARTHENOGENIC REPRODUCTION

To record a single Parent in ZIMS the species must be identified by Species360 as Asexual. If you follow the steps below to record a single Parent and you are not successful, contact support@Species360.org and they will mark it as Asexual in the taxonomic module.

To accession an animal with a single parent:

  1. When recording an Accession, record the known Parent in the Parent record for the Dam
  2. Record Indeterminate in the Parent record for the Sire and Save
  3. Complete the Accession and Save
  4. Go back in to the Parent grid
  5. Remove the Indeterminate Sire (simple click on Indeterminate)
  6. Save the Parent grid
  7. If the species is marked as Asexual it will allow you to have only the one Parent

Because Parent information is entered before the Taxonomy (Parents often drive the Taxonomy), ZIMS cannot identify that a single Parent is allowed for the species. Therefore, you have to first Save the entire record and then edit the Parent record. If you have existing records that should have only one Parent, you can choose to delete the Sire to more accurately reflect the truth.
